A Little Information About Cloud Computing

Kamis, 01 Juli 2010

http://trak.in/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/cloud-computing.jpg

The next big thing in computers is cloud computing. It may sounds like something that's fluffy and floating around in the sky, but it isn't. Cloud computing got its name from the symbol that was used to describe it on charts. What it is, basically, is on demand hosting. Instead of all of the computing tasks being done by one dedicated machine, it is farmed out into various connections and other computers over the Internet.

Cloud computing is often called utility computing, since it is a pay as you go service, similar to your electric bill. This is particularly true for the Infrastructure-as-a-service model. The most well-known of model of this kind of cloud computing is Amazon Web Services. What they do is give you a unique IP address, and blocks of s available storage. The company then provides a user interface that allows the used to access, start or stop the software. This usage can be sold by the minute, or by the hour, so that you only pay for what you actually use.

Cloud service can be public or private. A public cloud has services that are offered to anyone who pays for them, and anyone has the chance to access them. A private cloud is run and owned by a particular company, and they limit the access to those people who work for them or to clients who need those services. A private cloud can be created on a public cloud by a service provider, thus creating something called a virtual private cloud.

One worry when it comes to cloud computing is security. Computer security is a large ongoing issue to begin with, with break-ins happening even with firewalls, and security systems in place. Then, add in the more nebulous nature of the cloud computing into the mix, and many people get worried about the security of information. Normal security precautions don't work on clouds. Since there are many different connections that get used, each one is a potential weak point. There are steps that can be taken to secure data and information, and more are being developed. Right now, it is best to be vigilant when it comes to security and cloud computing. Clouds are the way of the future, they allow for more computing to happen.

You in Data

Selasa, 29 Juni 2010

A month ago I signed up to Daytum, a web service that lets you record data about your life. After admiring their simple and logical data recording method, I began wondering what drives people to disseminate their life in data and whether "Personal Intelligence" had anything to teach the "Business Intelligence" world.

Looking through the public profiles people are tracking everything from exercise regimes to irrational fears, from fuel consumption to religious activity. It seems to me that there are three main groups of users:

1. The efficiency drivers: those who track everything to give an objective view of where they can save money and time

2. The motivational diarists: those who record things like dietary intake and gym routines to chart their achievements and, I suspect, act as a record of shame when things go wrong.

3. The curious masses: those who enjoy visualizations of the number of cups of tea they've consumed this month or how many hours a year they spend on the toilet.

Data analysis and visualization in the business world has always had a strong arm in efficiency drives, so it is only natural that our first group have taken to do the same with their own finances. It can be quite revealing to find that your monthly coffee expenditure could pay for a weekend break for two.

However, it is the second cohort that interests me most. It is an old mantra that what doesn't get measured doesn't get done, but measures and targets handed down by management often produce the opposite of the desired effect. Perhaps empowering people with tools to track and visualize their own productivity could increase motivation, without the feeling that Big Brother is watching your every move. Or then perhaps it would just be another distraction.

As data recording becomes quicker and data visualization becomes easier, those who embrace personal data analysis may find a personal competitive advantage just as businesses do everyday. Whether businesses can harness this effectively to motivate their employees remains to be seen.

Lancaster Insurance IT Outsourcing Helps Agencies Boost Bottom Line

Jumat, 25 Juni 2010

Lancaster County Pennsylvania is an area known for its vast farms and rich Amish and Mennonite heritage. Despite the agricultural area's reputation, insurance businesses in Lancaster often rely heavily on technology to get the job done and keep their businesses on the cutting edge.

And when hiring an in-house IT professional to support a small business isn't feasible, Lancaster insurance agencies often turn to IT outsourcing to handle network security, data storage, and remote computer support.

In fact, in an economy where every dollar counts, small- and mid-size insurance businesses often find that IT dollars are best spent with a firm offering full-service support, rather than calling in for repairs as they crop up.

Why are small- to mid-sized businesses opting for off-site tech help?

In many cases, the costs associated with training a dedicated team of IT people, including salaries, expenses, and health insurance coverage quickly add up. For just one or two people, this coverage starts at more than $6,000 per month, a cost that successful small operations may find difficult to swallow.

But for a fraction of that cost, smaller or mid-size businesses can get the constant monitoring, software upgrades, and network security-without any of the hassles and cost of adding additional personnel by using the services of an IT outsourcing firm.

The benefit to using an IT outsourcing firm is not just having an efficient, functioning network - it's also getting recommendations to ensure that the business has the most up-to-date technology.

In an industry where customers rely on fast service, access to technology is critical. When trying to file a claim or issue a new policy, insurance agencies know that every second counts, and computer downtime can seriously erode their bottom line.

NEXT Lancaster insurance IT outsourcing can help small and medium sized businesses in Pennsylvania with their networking, remote support, PC, backup and disaster recovery, email, and web hosting needs. Visit http://mobilitechs.com for more information.

Web Editors are actually the tools of trade in the web business, enabling web authors to manifest their creativity in the form of beautiful websites and more. Web editors can be compared to the workshop of the internet and when it comes to this essential tool, any web designer knows what a good tool is worth.

If you're an aspiring web designer looking for insight or an established expert in the web business seeking inspiration then you've comes to the right place, here I'll show you what makes for a good web editor and also show you examples of HTML editors in the market.

If you're new to the industry, I'll start by informing you that HTML editors are categorized into two that is a) "What You See is What You Get" (WYSIWYG) editor and text editor.

Here are the benefits of both.

Text Editor

Flexibility - Once you learn how to write HTML with a text editor, you become conversant with the limitation of HTML. This means you're no longer limited by the functions of the editor.

Portability - If you write HTML on a text editor, it's easier for you to make changes anywhere you can access your pages. Most text editors are standardized across platforms, and if you use Notepad, that is available on all Windows machines.

Clean HTML - HTML editors usually add strange codes, tags, and attributes into the HTML. These can slow down the page download by adding superfluous characters, make your site only visible by one browser, and add unnecessary tags. Coding HTML in a text editor ensures that you only use HTML tags that you intend to use.

WYSIWYG Editor

Ease of use - With a WYSIWYG editor, you can get up and running in no time. Majority of these editors work like word processors, it significantly reduces the learning curve.

Computers and Other Networking Equipment

Sabtu, 19 Juni 2010

http://www.uberpc.org/images/stories/68573-co.jpg

In this generation computers have become a necessity in our everyday lives. We use computers at home and at work. The use of computers have made our daily lives easier in a great many ways. To name a few we can use email as opposed to physical mail; we can work from home and never see the office; we can pay bills online; we can chat with people online as opposed to in person or burning valuable cellular minutes. The list of things a computer can do is very extensive and is proving to be valuable in our everyday lives. When I think back to the time before email became popular, I say to myself how did I function without it?

The use of computers is so dominant now that even in our homes we have mini networks or if you're a geek like me full networks set up in your home. This is because you use different computers for different things. For example you have a computer for home office use; a computer for gaming; a computer for the kids, and etcetera.

No matter what you use the computer for, they all have to be connected to the internet otherwise they are virtually useless. Therefore, you have set up all kinds of modern tech stuff like wireless routers and wireless access points. Peripherals are a necessity too especially if you work from home. Connected to your mini network you have a printer at minimum or maybe even an all in one for the convenience.

With all this modern technology, the only time you need to leave the comfort of home is when you just feel like getting out. Everything else you can do with a computer!

Are We Too Dependent on Technology?

Senin, 17 Mei 2010

I attend meetings at my local weight management group. I am a lifetime member and still enjoy the support and networking and sometimes I get good article ideas. Today my idea came not from the meeting topic, but from what was happening.

This organization automated the operations of the main "store front" locations with computers several years ago. The remote locations they rent only for the meeting times, like at churches and gyms, are not automated. So there is obviously still a procedure for running a meeting manually, however the automated centers no longer stock the supplies for this and some of the staff members either have never been trained on, or have long forgotten, the manual procedures.

Today the computers were down, and even with the help of technical support the staff were not able to get them fixed by the end of the meeting. They weighed people manually and sold products, but attendance and product sales were not being recorded. That's a problem because the staff earns commissions based on attendance and product sales! This will also cause a slight problem for the members who do not prepay for a monthly pass, because next week the computer will want to charge them for a missed week and the receptionist will need to override the charge.

As a former employee, I loved the technology because it improved accuracy and saved time. But I do feel it reduced the human element somewhat. The receptionist is now so busy looking at the computer screen, scanning things, and clicking on options (when the computer is working:) that I feel eye contact has been reduced. And that reduces empathy and feelings of being connected which are VITAL to this organization.

I realize that many of the things we have today rely on technology. But have we become too dependent on it? Are we losing the human element of business?

I just upgraded to a "smart phone" this week. I confess I have wanted it for some time, so I came up with the excuse of wanting to check email and Facebook while away without having to carry my computer and possibly pay for internet access. I actually find it ironic that the low cost motel chains provide free wireless access while the larger, expensive hotels charge for in-room access. With more people getting smart phones every day, I wonder how soon the large hotels will stop offering access outside of their offices in the lobby which are normally free to use.

I love the idea of the smart phone, but ever since my husband got his, he is often distracted when I am trying to talk to him. It's just too easy to check mail or surf the net! One man even told me this week that he feels all of the kids these days (and some adults!) talk only in text messages. He said they are always referring to "talking" to their friends when actually they only exchanged text messages.

I love technology. But I escaped my career in it to have more human contact. Yes, I know you are reading this on a computer and I am writing it on a computer! But I submit articles in the hope of actually speaking with some of my readers one day!

Technology is grand and extends our reach. But don't forget that you have eyes and ears for a reason, and your mouth isn't just for eating! And my smart phone will never replace hugs.
